Try to recall how it was, when you had to do homework. Try to recall how it was, when you had to learn for the exam in school. When did you start to do all of this? One night before? Two nights? Probably not earlier.

There is such a thing, which is called Parkinson’s Law. Published in The Economist in 1955:

Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

In project management, you can learn, that it’s really important to gain more time, than would appear from the schedule. Always there may be some unexpected circumstances, which extends the duration of the project. It is always good to remember about that. It is always good to remember, to add some more time to our plans.

However in our lifes… when managing our own projects, when we care about productivity - we shouldn’t plan too much time for our tasks. Because why should we? In my life I am answerable to myself. I am my own boss. That’s why I should finish all of my plans as soon, as possible. That’s why I should organize my time and my tasks in such a way.

The most important thing is to be effective… not to care about the things unpredictable.

Remember about Parkinson’s Law. If the task, that could take a day of work, would be scheduled for a whole week – it will take a week. All of this, is because you will take care of it at the last moment and you will always find something to fix.

The more rational in planning of tasks you are, the more efficient will be your job. And that’s the point.
